Dimon deliberately puts his best people into jobs they don't understand.
Kristin Lemkau went from CMO to CEO of a $1T+ wealth division. No prior wealth management experience. That was the point. She described the model herself: "identifying the people that have the raw talent and then placing them in jobs where you are unfamiliar with the subject matter." Dimon calls these "test jobs." He confirmed it at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit. Most holdco operators deploy GMs the opposite way. Same domain. Known playbook. Feels safe. The problem: safe deployments compound mediocrity over time. The Dimon model works because JPMorgan has a platform strong enough to catch the stumble while the person finds their footing. That is the part nobody copies. Not the stretch assignment. The operating system behind it. At RPI, we think this is a useful way to deploy your best talent. Don't think immediately that you've got to source externally. Your best talent may be able to tackle the new job internally and you'll never know till you try.
