Different ETA models? Partnering with business owners?

Hi, I had recently seen a post where an individual bought multiple businesses (acquisitions) with private/investor capital. He partners with the entrepreneurs vs hiring an operator to grow the businesses.

How does one go about doing this and how is the process different from traditional search?

I’d assume the entrepreneur maintains some stake in the company and this is a way for them to obtain growth capital? On an individual company level I know of some searchers doing this but taking up the role of CFO while the owner remains in the CEO/President seat
