I’m a dentist and operator in Northern Ontario exploring a long-term transition from a stable clinical career into becoming an investor/operator. I currently run a large multi-provider dental clinic (~35 staff) but my thesis for acquisitions sits outside of dentistry. Namely, I'm interested in businesses that aren’t bottlenecked by scarce, regulated labour, and in rural/small-city markets where prices are more reasonable and local dominance is actually achievable. I’m curious to connect with people who’ve made a similar transition from a secure professional path (medicine, law, engineering, finance, etc.) into buying and operating small businesses. Specifically: - How you thought about timing and risk - How you built conviction in your investment thesis - What your first steps were before committing capital - What surprised you most once you became a full-time operator/investor - What you’d do differently if you had to restart I’m not looking at a specific deal today but I am trying to understand the mindset, frameworks, and real stories behind this career shift. Happy to trade notes! I’ve spent the last year scaling operations in a regulated healthcare environment and can share what I’ve learned about hiring, systems, patient flow, and team leadership. Thanks in advance to anyone open to sharing their experience.

Have a lot of thoughts here and have seen a lot of investments from the professionals group go poorly. Highly intelligent, highly driven as a group but sometimes I think they don't fully explore blind spots because they've been so good at what they do for so long that they've forgotten what it's like to be amateur / open to learn about something. Plus I think they often underestimate the culture shock in going from professional workplaces with a certain type of workforce to industries with a different workforce and culture. I have a lot more to say but don't want this message to be too long. Happy to share further notes and connect via DM

Hi ^redacted‌, I have spent the last 3 decades doing first-hand what you want to do. I've been an owner/operator in the dental sector, advisor to dozens of 'investor dentists' on dental acquisitions/financings, venture capitalist/merchant banker focused on the SME space, and I now consult for entrepreneurs (including dentists) who want to spread their wings in new ventures. You can reach me directly here on Searchfunder or on LInkedIn (I've sent you an invite to connect there). Looking forward to exploring opportunities with you. [Thanks ^redacted‌ for including me.]
