I am putting in an offer on a construction contractor in a US metropolitan area and am wondering how long a typical non-compete clause is for this type of company. I'd appreciate hearing about anyone's experience.

Hi Benjamin, we also typically see non-compete clauses covering 3-5 years. Non-competes often cover the geographical area within which you plan to expand as well. Most sellers don't have an issue with the length and geographic scope of a non-compete because they plan to retire. If you would like to learn more, we also have lessons on non-competes in further detail in Acquisition Insights, our course on buying a small business, available here: https://deanstreetlaw.com/links.
