Building a Property Services Roll-Up in Western Canada – Looking for Advice & Connections
Hello everyone,
About three years ago, I bought a landscape maintenance company in British Columbia, Canada. Since then, I've been running the business, working on growing it, and learning a ton along the way.
It's definitely been an eye-opening experience going from buying a business to actually running one day to day. There's a lot you don't fully appreciate until you're the one dealing with employees, customers, cash flow, and all the unexpected challenges that come with owning a business. It's also given me a much better understanding of what works, what doesn't, and where the opportunities are to improve and grow these types of companies.
I'm now looking to take what I've learned and build something bigger.
I'm working on a property services roll-up, with the goal of acquiring and bringing together established businesses in landscaping, snow removal, and other complementary property services with recurring revenue.
It's a pretty fragmented industry, with a lot of great owner-operated businesses. I think there's a real opportunity to bring some of these companies together, improve operations, share resources, and build a much larger business.
We've already identified our first acquisition target and are actively working toward a deal. The plan is to use my existing company as the foundation for a larger regional property services group.
I'm now working through how best to structure the acquisitions, bring in investors, and raise the capital needed to get things moving.
I'm hoping to get some advice and recommendations from the Searchfunder community, particularly around:
1. Securities Lawyers in BC: Does anyone have a recommendation for a good securities lawyer in British Columbia who has experience with private capital raises, investor structures, and acquisitions? Ideally someone familiar with smaller private equity deals and roll-ups.
2. Raising Capital: For those who have raised money for acquisitions or a buy-and-build strategy, what worked for you? Anything you wish you'd known before starting?
3. Investor Connections: I'd also be interested in connecting with investors, family offices, or anyone who has an interest in Canadian small-business acquisitions and the property services industry.
4. General Advice & Resources: If you've been through a roll-up or have experience building a business through acquisitions, I'd love to hear about your experience. Any recommendations for advisors, resources, or people worth connecting with would be appreciated.
I'm comfortable with the day-to-day operations side of running a business, but the capital-raising and larger acquisition strategy is new territory for me. I'm sure there are plenty of things I haven't thought of yet, so I'm hoping to learn from people who have already been down this road.
Thanks in advance for any advice, recommendations, or introductions. I really appreciate it!
