Boards and Advisors on successful Self Funded Search?

Though not required, are there benefits to having an official Board of Directors versus Advisors for a successful Self-Funded Search?

I have seen several discussion about Equity Investors wanting board positions, which seems like it could be a positive to me.

Also, are these positions compensated in any way either through stock or distributions?
