For those with operational experience (if you own a small business), have you thought about starting a private equity syndication or fund?

Example: Real Estate owner / operator graduates to syndications as a general partner. They find the deal and update the limited partners per SEC regulations, etc...

Why not do this as a private equity syndication or fund? Find investors vs. SBA lenders.

Sure, SBA is just one source of financing. It’s not necessarily the heart of the ETA model, and can’t be used for larger transactions.

You tend to see people acting as “fundless” independent sponsors before they’re in a position to raise fund capital. Neither one really works well with the search fund model because there’s a limit to what a single person can be CEO of.

I would suggest there’s a reason people who start private equity funds tend to have finance rather than operating backgrounds though. The key competency in PE is fundraising from institutions - operators are easy enough to hire.
