It gives some great insight on how to setup and fill your "sales/ opportunity" funnel which I think overlays well onto the search process. As others have mentioned - your approach should be multi-channel. Start with a clear idea of who and what you're targeting (industries, sizes, characteristics, etc), then, create a list (people/ companies to call on). Geographical focus may help some or narrow you too much. Start with phone calls (it's usually the most difficult thing to get started on), then follow up with an email, and third a Linked IN connection request.
Outside of search - it normally takes 6-7 touch-points to generate meetings or engagement with a prospect who is needs what you're selling (in this case an exit) - this is what it takes to build awareness and trust to take the next step.
So back to your question - does Linked IN work. Absolutely, does it or should it work on its own, with a single message or connection request - probably not very well. Response rate on cold outreach, with non-personalized messages is about 1.5% across most of the automated platforms. So it works, just not well.

1. LI has clamped down significantly on the number of connection requests you can make in the past few months. Before, an account can make 100 requests a day now only 20. If you wish to make additional requests, they would encourage inmail, which has cost.
2. Echoing with some of the points here, we get about a 2-3% response rate from the business owners, which is good when we were doing 100 requests a day but when it is 20 requests a day, it means we get about 12 responses a month.
3. Accounts also appear to be more easily restricted.
Imo, they are trying to channel users to use it more like traditional social media where you post and engage instead of playing numbers game with automation, which potentially has more sustained returns if you are willing to make the upfront investments.
