One thing I have been thinking about with SMBs is the fact that some of these owners have yet to offer benefits such as a 401k and more importantly healthcare. As this is a big expense, how have some of you thought about this in recruiting talent? If anyone has experience in rolling out a plan post acquisition, would love to connect. I know its a bridge that I have yet to even come close to, but it is something I have been thinking about during my search.

Commenting here because I am in the exact same boat - far from needing it, but think about it often. Would like to hear responses

Sounds like you may be interested in setting up a phone call with a couple of PEO companies. They basically take over your payroll and pay your employees as though they work for them, which allows them to group your employees into a larger group for the purposes of benefits. This is supposed to there for offer the ability to get some of these benefit packages for a more reasonable cost. You'll have to determine that for yourself. I do know that Aspen HR advertises a lot on the acquiring minds podcast which means they have a pretty good understanding most likely of the small business acquisition circumstances. I think you could just set up a consult and get some pretty good information. https://aspenhr.com/employee-benefits/
