I'm considering an opportunity that specializes in roofing, gutters, siding, etc. and would love to hear first hand experiences on the pros and cons of the industry. Specifically, what they DON"T advertise as part of the job. All opinions (positive or negative) appreciated.

We have represented (and are currently representing) roofing companies around the USA. There are many considerations, but if they have a track record, a good business plan related to target market, and are insulated, for the most part, away from new construction, they can be a great acquisition. They won't come cheaply, and you will have to learn all aspects of the business and the customers they serve. Commercial vs Residential. Reroofing has great demand. Ask if they have maintenance agreements, co-op agreements for commercial roofers. Do they deal in insurance settlements i n locales like FL or Louisiana? Stay away from the companies that haven't been around very long, have a poor or marginal business model, or rely way to heavily on new construction.

We have financed numerous roofing companies over the years. If I can provide any guidance from that perspective and what our customers have experienced, I would be happy to do so. There are a lot of differences in the type of company depending on if they are focused on storm work, standard repair and re-roof, new construction, or commercial.
