Hi all! Met with a foreign investor last week that is looking to acquire smaller accounting firms in Canada and eventually the US if the opportunity arises ($800k-1.2m revenue mainly; at least 5 employees) and bring them under one umbrella. Anybody here have experience acquiring these types of firms (primarily in Canada) and willing to have a chat? He holds a US CPA designation, and has practiced and owned firms for many years (between the US and India). An expert in his field, but very new to the acquisition side and is curious what to look out for in the process as a buyer. Thanks! Feel free to comment or send me a dm. Alex

Spent quite a bit of time looking into it (am also a CPA). Hardest thing is scale; at the end of the day its a human capital business and that makes it hard to scale and generate meaningful operating leverage. I know many who have tried but doing it successfully is very challenging, especially when looking at the size you are looking at. The other challenging piece is, with a firm that small, the transfer of "trust" in the relationship, which often is with the principal you are buying out. Drop me a line, happy to chat more.
