Advice/tips for a self-funded, geographically focused search in Michigan?

I'm in the early stages of exploring a geographically-focused (state of Michigan) self-funded search. I have a handful of questions around getting started and the mechanics of this kind of self-funded search. I would greatly appreciate input for anyone who has experience with these constraints.
