Adjusting Employee Pay Down

I recently closed an acquisition and have been working to make some corrections to the pay structure within the company. Most employees have received modest raises. However, there is one employee who used to be in a relationship with the seller's son and she is still with the company. For the position and skills required, I believe she is overpaid by about 20-25%. Any advice on how to have this conversation? I don't think there are any legal issues to be concerned as long as I give her notice of the change.

Thanks.

We have had to deal with these types of HR issues fairly often when assisting clients with acquisition transitions or even turn-around situations. The best thing to do is address the overall organizational structure and update all job descriptions along with a compensation analysis of the required positions. Then you will have the information to back up the conversation with the employee you feel is over paid for the position.

That's a really shrewd recommendation
